In 2008, my husband, Morio, was sentenced to the Missouri Department of Corrections for several years. Every year felt like 10, and the days drug by while he was behind bars for everyone involved. But he was able to connect with a great group and change his life forever while locked up.
I wish I could say my kiddos and I had a support system during this time, but we didn’t. We were alone and I felt like no one understood or cared about the pain we were living with. I know there have to be others out there that have or are affected by prison and feel like no one cares or understands.
If you are one of these people or know someone who is like this, then you need to hook up with the Journey Prison Ministry. If you go to Journey, then you probably know that our Prison Ministry goes into Vandalia Prison regularly and does an annual yard jam. But you might not know about the other things the Prison Ministry does.
The Card Ministry is an area where a group of people get together monthly to make cards and write cards to prison inmates. They actually HAND MAKE every card and send one to every inmate they receive information on. Now that says LOVE and CARING! (This team meets the 3rd Monday of every month at Journey Church.)
We also have a volunteer team that goes into the prison and hosts a Bible study for the inmates. They have a Prison Ministry Training once a month for everyone that wants to go and be a visitor to the prison. And there is a chapel service every quarter provided by the Prison Ministry Team and the Journey Staff.
I think everyone should know about this important ministry that is doing HUGE things for people. But I think sometimes when you are a person in this situation there is a feeling of embarrassment and shame. You feel like no one with understand and worry that they might treat you differently if they knew. And if this is you, then you need to contact Kay Gleaves at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I know we can help you, whether you have been in prison or have a close family member or friend that has been in prison.
Please help us improve the ministry by taking this short survey.
